The holiday crazy season is fast approaching so now is the time to start planning how you are going to maximise your digital sales this Black Friday, Cyber Monday and in the lead-up to Christmas shopping period.

A few years ago, Black Friday didn't exist, and now it's one of the biggest shopping events of the entire year.

Why you can't ignore Black Friday/Cyber Monday:
  • According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Australian retail turnover rose 1.4 per cent in November 2022 to a new record high

  • Australians spent more than an estimated $7.1 billion across the four-day Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping event, NAB transaction data shows*.

  • Spend was up 20% compared with the week prior, with the strongest performer being shoe stores, up 146%. Camera stores were also up 116%, with electronic and clothing stores close behind – both up 65% and 64% respectively.

When is Black Friday/Cyber Monday?
  • Black Friday 2023 falls on Friday, 24 November this year. The accompanying Cyber Monday is on Monday, 28 November, with most retailers keeping the sales running all weekend.

How can I prepare to maximise sales for Black Friday?

1. Plan early:

If you haven't already, start planning your Black Friday marketing strategy NOW. This will give you enough time to come up with creative ideas and execute them effectively.

  • What are your goals and targets?

  • How will you achieve this?

  • How will you implement this?

  • How will you measure if your strategy has been successful?

2. Build hype:

Create a sense of excitement and urgency around Black Friday by promoting it on your website, social media channels, and email newsletters. Use catchy slogans and graphics to grab your audience's attention.

3. Offer discounts:

Black Friday is all about discounts, so make sure you offer significant discounts on your products. You can even offer exclusive discounts to your loyal customers to show your appreciation.

If your business isn't about discounts but you still want to participate think of ways you can add value to your audience. Valuable bundle deals is another great way to combine popular products with lesser-known items. This will encourage customers to buy more and increase your overall sales.

4. Create a sense of exclusivity:

Create limited-time offers or exclusive deals to make customers feel special. This can be a great way to attract new customers as well as retain existing ones.

5. Leverage social media:

Use social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and Twitter to promote your Black Friday deals. Use hashtags and encourage your followers to share your posts to increase your reach.

6. Email marketing:

Send out email newsletters to your subscribers with details about your Black Friday deals. Personalise your emails by addressing your subscribers by name and recommending products based on their previous purchases.

7. SMS marketing:

Consider sending SMS blasts to your database!

Since the pandemic, the SMS open rate for Australia has increased to a whopping 94%. 60% of Australian Adults in 2020 relied solely on a mobile phone for home telecommunication. (Source: Australian Communications and Media Authority). SMS marketing is cheaper than other forms of advertising. The average cost per send is $0.07 for SMS, while the cost per click for Google Search is on average $1.39 and Linkedin is $3.87. (Source: BurstSMS).

8. Upsell and cross-sell

Encourage customers to buy more by upselling and cross-selling related products. For example, if a customer is buying a laptop, offer them a discount on a laptop bag or a mouse.

9. Retargeting campaigns

Use retargeting campaigns to target customers who have visited your website but did not make a purchase. Show them ads with your Black Friday deals to encourage them to come back and make a purchase.
