Shipperd's influence : Seeking wisdom with the Master.

An Adam Crosthwaite Andrew Walton & Greg Shipperd planning session
An Adam Crosthwaite Andrew Walton & Greg Shipperd planning session

As a professional cricketer, when you are fully focused and immersed in competition, the ability to step outside or above to look and think from a different perspective is often discussed yet was rarely handled properly. These are lessons I learnt from Greg Shipperd "The Master".

For many years, the impact of being coached, mentored, disciplined but also nurtured by Greg Shipperd was always appreciated. Yet until the time together comes to an end; the understanding of it all is still to be properly absorbed. Shippy has had an enormous impact that is difficult to measure on so many players in this country. His influence is easy to see on the the past, the current and the next generation which he is still building at NSW and Sydney. But it is also true for any player at all that came under his watch the lessons were detailed and deep. It is clear that Greg has shaped Australian cricket over decades and the master is still the best at it.

In 2021, before another cricket season, with only a pen on a page, after having a few specific and detailed conversations with Shippy, it prompted the mind to map out a path for Sport to become part of The Brand Bar activities.

Being unable to stray far away from cricket, this was used as a basis for looking into what is coming that will shape change in the years between 2022 to 2024. Forces that weren't as yet a feature in the cricket landscape but would soon shape the future of cricket as we know it.

Theses “Market Forces” were noted in August 2021 to which could shape the future of the game:

  1. Two new IPL franchises

  2. T20 World Cup in Australia, an advantage being host as champions

  3. Women’s IPL

  4. Cricket returning to Games level

  5. Reform of UK cricket system and pathway

  6. Rise of acceptance, greater than ever before of Asian players and administrators.

  7. NFT’s

  8. Volume of streaming content across platforms

  9. Media and content providers adopting bundle subscription models

  10. Structure of next generation broadcasting

Some of the points were educated and known to a degree, some were gut feel, some have been proven incorrect. But the knowledge that came from these sessions was like Shippy had a crystal ball into the future.

Being able to articulate the thoughts onto a page has been a powerful source of reflection that today has given rise to the launch of the business The Brand Bar | Marketing Agency TBB Sport division, where we believe that in today’s competitive sports landscape, brands and athletes must go beyond the game to build lasting impact.

The approach is simple, we build valuable partnerships for rights holders, athletes and sponsors - by creating unique insight-driven strategy, creative storytelling, and commercial expertise. Its these insights and more that come from lasting relationships cultivated in decades of friendship and respected figures across the industry and across the world.

With gratitude and eternal respect, we are grateful that Greg has allowed us to return the favour.
